When the Detroit Lions made the decision to sign quarterback Matthew Stafford to a three-year, $53 million extension, they made it clear that he is the face of the future of the franchise.

And at just 25 years old, Stafford has a lot of future to look forward to. In 45 starts over four seasons, Stafford has thrown for 12,807 yards and 80 touchdowns. That's a career average of 284.6 yards and 1.7 touchdowns per start.

But while Stafford has set multiple franchise records at such a young age, he's no where near invincible. Despite the highest passer rating in a single season in Detroit Lion history (97.2 in 2011), this past season was a step backward for him and for the team. While he has quieted the early naysayers who questioned his ability to stay healthy, he simply hasn't won enough to silence the talking heads who consistently harp on his gunslinger mechanics.

But we digress. Today we offer you our Top 4 moments of the young Lions' career, in chronological order. Don't agree? Argue what you believe to be one of Stafford's top performances in the comment section below. Be sure to include as many game specifics as possible and why the performance was a critical one for Stafford and the Detroit Lions.

November 22, 2009 -- Detroit Lions vs. Cleveland Browns

It will take something out of this world (read: playoffs) to ever unseat this performance. This was the day that Matthew Stafford earned his stripes and won over the hearts of fans. Despite excruciating pain and pretty much one arm, Stafford orchestrated a dramatic 38-37 win over the Browns. It doesn't matter how many times you've watched it, the fact that NFL SoundFX had Stafford mic'd up for this moment was a miracle that never gets old.

September 18, 2011 -- Detroit Lions vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Stafford threw for 295 yards and 4 touchdowns in a 48-3 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. The win was the largest margin of victory in team history. Stafford was named the NFL player of the week for his performance.

September 25, 2011 -- Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings

Wait, who is that at the helm for the Vikings? Just Matthew Stafford's biggest fan, Donovan McNabb. Minnesota led Detroit 20-0 at halftime, mostly due to running back (and resident Lions killer) Adrian Peterson and Stafford's inability to adjust to Minnesota's multiple zone blitzes.

But Stafford's second half performance (in combination with the comeback he put together the following week in Dallas) symbolized a new day in Motown. With 11 minutes to go in the third quarter, from the Minnesota 32 yard line, Stafford placed a pass deep right in the Calvin Johnson green zone for the score. Stafford threw another TD to Johnson in the fourth and Hanson kicked three second-half field goals (plus one in overtime) to seal the deal.

Granted, Johnson and Hanson played pivotal roles in the comeback, but Stafford orchestrated the first win at the Metrodome since 1997, making it the first 3-0 start for the Detroit Lions in 31 years. Center Dominic Raiola called it his "best win ever" at the time.

October 28, 2012 -- Detroit Lions vs. Seattle Seahawks

2012 wasn't anyone's best season, but there were moments. In week 7, still hoping to stay in playoff contention, Stafford led his team on a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter, capped off by Titus Young's 1-yard touchdown reception with 20 seconds remaining. (Sorry for mentioning the T word). The winning drive went 80 yards in 5:07 minutes.

Stafford completed 34-of-49 passes for 352 yards, four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) and one interception in the win.

I will never forget the Clevland game. Even with it being between two perenial "nobodys", It was probably one of the most entertaining games I have ever watched. (def in the top 10 of all time) Staff comming in with the broken collarbone to throw for the game winning TD at the end of the game.....EPIC!!!

His most memorable performance to me was the Saints playoff game, when he failed to pick up a first down on two consecutive drives and we got killed thereafter...
