I don't think this is going to surprise many people.

Hope he finds a good life outside football.

Great Player, Sad ending to his career, but health is more important. As stated before, Class move for the Lions to keep him until now to help him accrue time in the NFL.

What might have been.

One step. Boom. 88-yards.

Once Best went out with a concussion in 2011, the Lions didn't have that running threat. It's a point that got mentioned from time to time, but I still have to wonder if 2012 would have been different if Best had been able to stay healthy and play a full season.

Since Best is a post June 1st cut this should give the Lions almost another 1 mil in cap space.

So... Does anyone know if our stint with him as now allowed him to be eligible for retirement benefits? Or did we cut him before they took effect?

As far as I understand it, he qualified for it at the end of last season..but I am NO expert.

Sad to see his career cut short. A good player. Glad the Lions stood by him, it was the classy thing to do.

He should have qualified for the pension after the end of last season. From what I have read a player just requires 3 full seasons on a team to be eligible. One of the articles I saw said he would get $470 per season played as a monthly credit. $1400 is not a ton of money for a pro but he did make a few million already from his rookie deal. He could still accrue more time if he can get cleared and find a team willing to take on the risk.

If that's accurate, he should already have or be close to having a college degree, he's well spoken, and would be a good caster/spokesperson, and he has a built in cause to speak about. He'll do better than most of us... Not to mention that he should have a couple mill in the bank... That always helps...

Dont forget that we didn't keep him around for the pension benefits. It's the medical benefits that he'll need throughout the rest of his life.

Loved watching him play. As others have said, oh what could've been in 2011 had he stayed healthy! Hope he does well; he always seemed like a smart kid.

Really a shame his career was cut short like that. I don't think he would have made anyone forget Barry Sanders, but he could have been pretty good.

On a side note, why did it take the Lions this long to release him?
