Crazy half of football.

We look fundamentally the better team, just we keep shooting ourselves in the foot.

Only one point down, I think we pull out the win. Their d will hopefully be gassed come the 4th Q.

holding on 4th down, false start on 2nd and 4, blocking in back and at knee when teammate running free to end zone, head butting someone after play, dropping easy INT for TD, dropping a field goal snap ---- those are fundamentals too!

Yeah, I agree. I would hope we are more likely to cut out that crap in the 2nd half than ponder is to become a good qb or the Vikings defense is to get a handle on our offense.

Hope is a strong word when it comes to the lions, though!

Why the hell would Schwartz have challenged that catch?

Thanks ponder for almost falling down and giving the lions the football on the 39 yard line

To those in the chat, sorry for the language. The turnover really was the last straw as I thought it would'nt end for the whole game. I had to go and had to drop one before leaving after the miscues.

Man oh man is this going to be an exciting year. We held AP to 13 yards on 17 carries after his first huge run. That is a great accomplishment for this defense. This team is much better than I've seen it in a long time. The offensive line looks pretty good, the offense will be a mismatch against any defense, and the defense isn't a liability any more. Levy, my breakout prediction this year, looks very good, Tulloch is fairly solid, Slay/Houston/Bentley/Quin/Delmas is a fine secondary and we have the best defensive line in the world right now.

Go Lions

The offense coming back to put up points after getting boned out of numerous overturned TDs was nice to see. The run D looked great after the first play. Secondary will be torched by Green Bay and Chicago, you can bank on that.

Issues I see...
Far too many stupid penalties
Blown coverages
Inability to run on short yardage situations 2-3 yards.
No deep threat WR
Average safety play at best
Sloppy play -- botched FG hold

And yet again, we get zebra'd. The perennial CJ non-TD, letting OLmen tackle suh on almost every play, mint calling late hits, etc.

Hooray for Fuaria! Edwards had a catch or two here and there.

Is Reggie Bush going to completely redefine this offense or what?

Yeah, there's some things to clean up. The Suh penalty on the Levy interception wasn't a block in back or low hit. He was in front of him and last year that was a legal block. This year, the rule changed so you can't block to the side anymore, you have to face them. In the heat of a return, it's not something the starting DL would ever work on repeatedly enough, so it was understandable. I expect to see that penalty a lot around the league this year.

Bush ended up 7 yards short of Billy Simms' record of 100 rushing/100 receiving.

The biggest plus you can take out of this game is 469 yards of total offense and only 37 came from Calvin.

Lots of activity here on the forum, hopefully next week some more people come on to the chat. Had fun with some of the regs who know way more about football than I ever will.

I am totally in agreement that Bush showed what a versatile RB will do to open up this offense. Glad that the team didn't let the called back TD's get in their heads and battled the entire game. Stafford had a decent game, but I am concerned about the number of batted/ tipped passes in this game.

The need to cut back on the stupid penalties is a given, although the one on Suh for the low block is new this year, and when one has played one way for so many years, some adjustments will be needed. I will also give a mulligan to Ansah, first game, big down, nerves will get the better of all rookies at some point.

Convo has it right, the secondary is going to get torched by QB's of Rogers caliber. Even with the first 78 yard run, the D Line can hold their heads high, played a great game afterwards, holding AP to around 100 yards. LB'ers also looked very competent.

On the penalties, I did state in chat that I don't understand why Cunningham doesn't get more blame. I know Schwartz is ultimately responsible for how the team plays and keeping the Coordinators in line, but he can't necessarily micro manage every player. But if he can't get his coordinators to do their jobs, then yes, he is failing as a HC.

Anyway, good game today. The expected deficiencies are there, but the good points are also their. I find I am looking forward to this season, which is an upgrade of how I felt before the game.
