Post Headed to Chicago
Hey everyone. I am going to my 2nd lions game ever(the first was one in KC during the Joey Harrington era) in Chicago next weekend.

I am kind of nervous that other fans will try to start something with me. Has that been a problem for other Lions fans making the trip to Chicago?

I will probably try to look up some numbers to text/tweet/call if some fans get rowdy, but I was just hoping my fears could be expelled.

My buddy (a Lions fan) went to the last couple games here. The Bears fans were pretty sh***y to him. That being said, they weren't violent, just disrespectful. The on-field rivalry also seems to have cooled a bit this year, so I think you'll be fine.

Get used to it. Unless you wear a bears jersey, expect a huge rash of sh!t. Bears fans are cubs fans, and they're among the worst on the planet. I live in Chicago and the fans here are so much less tolerant than Detroit, Tampa, Seattle, KC, Indy, STL, Miami, etc. I've been to multiple sporting events in each of those cities and Chicago is by far the worst, with some of the biggest bandwagoners I've ever seen. A lot like NY.

I'd absolutely love to experience that, I welcome that sort of behavior especially from rival fans. Hope you have a good time, let us know how it all plays out.

went to 5 lions-bears games at soldier, never had a problem at the games. bigger issue is watching the game at a chicago bar with lions gear on. people might give you some ribbing but its going to be pretty civilized provided you dont escalate things further. i wouldnt worry at all, have fun and Go Lions

i agree they are obnoxious fans but there s nothing that goes on at the games that a normal adult cant handle. in some places you can have fun talking back but its honestly not even worth it with chicago fans since they know so little about there sport or other teams. as co2 says they are huge bandwagoners.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I assume nothing significant will happen beyond a little banter. Was just curious on what to expect. I'll report Monday after I get back to Nebraska.

The game can't be any worse than the one I saw in KC years ago. I found the box score from it:

I remember it had snowed the day/night before. My father and I got there super early and had to sweep off 6" of snow from our seats. We got killed, but had a some solid seats and stayed until the bitter end. Screw you Joey Harrington!

I forgot to come back and give a little update:

The game was about as fun as could be expected. Our seats were up about as high as possible, but the view was still fine. Didn't look to be a bad seat in the house.

The bears fans gave me a little crap, but nothing malicious. As the game went on the Lions fan around me(there were actually quite a few), and I got louder and louder. After the game there was a small fight between a lions fan and a couple bears fans. I didn't see much of it, but if it was the lions fan i am thinking of, then he deserved it(he was yelling at random bears fan throughout the game).

I was amazed with how much beer they sell. I didn't drink because I didn't want to miss action to piss, but anytime I looked up, there were a few beer vendors in each aisle.

All told it was a fun trip, and a great venue to watch a game. Hopefully my next lions game isn't in 10 more years.

Glad you had fun. I lived in Chicago for 3 years and I absolutely loved it. The city will always have a special place in my heart (I'll never cheer for the Bears though). I always had a positive experience with Chicago sports fans, and I found that if you don't act like a jerk, they won't be a jerk to you. Actually, I've found the same everywhere I've lived, even in Philly. Yes, even the crazy Philly fans aren't so bad. I went to a Bears vs. Eagles game with a friend of mine who was wearing a Bears jersey, and nothing bad at all happened to him. Just some good natured ribbing back and forth.

Anyway, as I said, glad to hear my former home treated you well. Go Lions!

I've been to many out of town sporting events wearing Detroit/Michigan attire (Lions, Wolverines, and Tigers) and it is to be expected that I'll receive some insults, or at the very least, light jabs. But, there was one exception to this rule. That was Jacksonville about 8 years ago. The Lions lost even after two Eddie Drummond return TDs, but the Jaguar fans were nothing but polite, fun, cordial, and friendly. I wish it were more often like that when venturing into "enemy territory", but unfortunately, that isn't the case from my experience.

The Saints fans were awesome. Not only were they non-combative, but the girls were very friendly, if you catch my drift.

If the Lions go back to New Orleans in the playoffs I'm definitely going to the game.

i've been to few lions v vikings games and for the most part the fans suck. The ribbing and jabs are perfectly fine but these people can not take it when they are losing and they tend to leave if there is any adversity after halftime. I go with my best friend who is a die hard Vikings fan and even he thinks they take it to far. I've been threatened at every game and that is in the good seats. I still enjoy the games and look forward to giving them a memorable L in the Metrodome's final game.

I went to Foxborough for the Patriots game a few years back, the fans were good for the most part, and the overall atmosphere was good. I was in the Standing Room only section, and for part of the game the Lions were winning, with the faithful grumbling a bit, but when the Pats came back, I got some good natured ribbing and back slaps. ( I was wearing my good ole #30 Schlesinger jersey) Overall the fans were respectul, and complimented when the Lions had some good drives.

I was pretty neat to run across some other Lions fans and acknowledge each other. The only negative, and it was very minor, was when I went the to the bathroom at one point, and a couple of drunk fans got a bit explicit in their put downs, but since it only lasted less than a minute, I pretty much discounted it.
