What was that Kickers name that filled in for Hanson a couple of years ago when Hanson was injured? And is he kicking for anyone. He did a pretty good job for us. I just can't remember his name.

Dave Rayner, FA since the end of the 2011 season.

Rayner was signed on November 9, 2010 to fill in for the injured Jason Hanson.
In a December 19, 2010 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Rayner kicked a game-tying field goal as time expired in the 4th quarter. He then kicked a game-winning field goal in sudden death overtime. He became the first Lions kicker to accomplish this feat.
On January 2, 2011 against the Minnesota Vikings, Rayner kicked a career-long 55-yard field goal. Only Jason Hanson had kicked a longer field goal as Lions kicker.
On August 29, 2011, Rayner was released by the Lions

Solid move by the FO.

Might be a good time to pull out that trump card again. It worked once.

Sorry, but you don't cut a kicker who is a year removed from being a damn good pro bowler and is coming off obvious injuries, and has looked awesome in the PS for a guy who has never kicked in a real game before and who's mechanics are terrible. I know people love the guy because he can kick footballs into balls he just punted, but seriously, it's about winning. It's not a F'ing clown show.

100% agree

Maybe you can agree that we need a F'ing kicker. Wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to rely on a 38 year old kicker WHO SUCKED LAST SEASON?

Again, AKERS CAN NOT BE TRUSTED. i dont see how rugland could be any worse than what we have seen from dumpster juice Akers. is anyone still behind this fail

What is Rugland doing these days? Maybe we should cut Akers an sign Rugland. If Rugland misses a couple we can say that at least he has room to improve. In contrast, Akers is at the end of his career and can only get worse.

He's not kicking for anyone else, and it seems he's still a big Lions supporter. Here's his tweet from yesterday:

The Lions need to stay in touch with that guy, and bring him in for next season. Akers is done. I don't think they'll make a change during this season, but they definitely need to make a change for next season.

i dont think rugland is an in-season answer he would need to prove himself before latching onto a potential playoff team for the stretch run. the lions should have some workouts for available kickers though

If not Kickalicious, then Raynor would be a good option. I can't believe Raynor didn't get a job after leaving the Lions. He was great for us. We couldn't have asked for better from him.

Anywhere from the opponents 40 yard line up to the 25 yard line, the Lions should be going for it on 4th down on every possession. I had my doubts about Akers, but wow, does he suck. Can't just take the kicker for granted as a Lions fan anymore. They must spend a pick on a kicker or get a decent option in free agency, IMHO. Hate spending cash on a kicker, but it must be done before next season.
Akers has cost the Lions at least one game this season. The difference between 8-3 and 7-4 is a big difference and it should never come down to your kicker missing a chip shot to get you into the playoffs. Akers might be worse than Grammatica.
What's Ray Finkle up to these days?

Didn't get a job? He kicked for us twice btw, both when Hanson was injured. First in '08, second in '11. After his first stint, he kicked for Bengals, Redskins and Bengals again. Second time, he kicked for Cowboys (missed two fgs in row and was cut), Raiders (injury replacement for Janikowski, cut week later) and Buffalo (Signed in Nov. '11, and made a 56 harder in first game. Then missed two first quarter fgs and then got injured in that same game. That was when teams stopped signing him.

No thanks :)

Kickalicious took part in the kicker tryouts we held this week (apparently to put Akers on notice). Obviously, no one's been signed yet, but they're saying if Akers misses again, he could be gone.
