The reason I suspect that many come here illegally is because it so difficult to do so legally. There are lots of articles written about this. See:

Also, TruckinMack, I suspect you have no experience running a strawberry farm, or for that matter, a restaurant. As a former GM, it is difficult or impossible to operate without Mexicans, even in the state of Michigan.

And that is a case for getting government out of our lives. We should neither see or hear our government in our daily lives. But, the government has become a parasitic leach just sucking the lifeblood out of all business so that they can't make an honest buck.

I believe you just gave an excellent example of why we need to get illegals out of our economy. It's about time Americans got access to those jobs that only illegals will do. Which BTW will start costing a lot more once the illegals are legalized. I suspect many of the below legal pay scale and sub-standard work conditions are doing so mostly out of fear of the INS.

Since you asked, self employed for almost 30 years, including owner/CEO/Mgr of health clinic for 24+ years now. I also am co-owner of an internet web site that gives away free health care advice. In my free time I am writing a book and training for Triathlons. Once I was dirt poor, working and paying my way through college at Wayne State and living in the Cass Corridor. Presently doing well. Not rich, (though extremely rich by my college days standard). Got here by being hungry and working like a fool, not to mention saving, not spending, my money. Along the way I worked with the Muscular Dystrophy association for 6 years, or so. I coached youth sports x 12+ years, (including 2 years as an Athletic Director). I have been Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus, and helped at my church in many ways. I was even a gopher for a sports personality for two years, which let me hang out at the Lions practice facility several times, including draft weekends. Still trying to help others learn the same lessons I have. Don't count on Uncle Sam. Count on yourself and your family.

Very few Americans are willing to wash dishes for $7 an hour. The ones that are willing are the lazy/going to come to work stoned-type.

My kids are all out or about out of college. During their HS and or early college years they were looking for work. Part time and seasonal work is incredibly difficult to find. I suspect much of this is due to illegals taking the jobs. Give those jobs back to our kids who are indeed willing to work.

Simple question: have ever managed a workforce that was at least 75% minimum-wage workers?

EDIT: There's a contingent of Mexican cooks in Ann Arbor that get paid much more than minimum wage. Why? They work their assess off.

EDIT 2: Also implying that there should be jobs "for Americans" is inherently socialistic. If you believed in a free market, you'd support the best man for the job. Just another way traditional conservative ideology contradicts itself.

As you've mentioned before, eliminate welfare, food stamps, and housing assistance. Guess how quickly Americans will suddenly take those jobs? It's a no-brainer.

For the record, I don't think we need immigration reform. Just enforce the laws already on the books. I'd supplement border security with land mines and snipers, but I know that will never happen. THAT would actually work, so it won't happen. Hence, the Washington politicos aren't serious about actually stopping it. So, we're probably stuck with illegal aliens taking our jobs, while increasing our welfare rolls at their expense, or at the expense of other Americans too lazy to take the jobs that the illegals took from them. It's another unending problem which won't be fixed.

The best legal man for the job. Your standard says breaking the law is an acceptable way of doing business.
