Skeletons in the closet

Remember way back to last spring, when players were released after June 1 or they retired or were traded during the season? Well, they all show up in the 2005 team salary-cap ledger, and it's time to pay the piper.

Lincoln Kennedy retired, Jerry Rice was traded, and Tim Brown, Rod Woodson and Barrett Robbins were released, but they'll be eating up a little over $8 million of 2005 space, which is hard to deal with when you are trying to build a better team this season.

But they're not the only ones with old skeletons in the closet. Bob Whitfield, the old Falcons offensive tackle, is on the books for $3.6 million. Tim Couch will dent the Browns books for $1.6 million and now Jeff Garcia will take up over $3 million of space.

Remember former Cowboys quarterbacks Chad Hutchinson and Quincy Carter? Those guys will eat up $1.8 million. I hardly can remember Daryl Gardener playing for the Broncos, yet he will use up $2 million of Mike Shanahan's cap. The Packers are looking to upgrade their defensive talent and sure could use the $4.7 million in cap space Joe Johnson and Jamal Reynolds will consume.

Hugh Douglas got a chance to go to the Super Bowl as a Philadelphia Eagle but the second-highest charge on the Jacksonville salary cap will be $3.6 million for Douglas. Former Steelers linebacker Jason Gildon went to camp last summer as a Buffalo Bill and finished up the season as a defensive end for the Jaguars, but in 2005 he will be the 12th-highest Steelers cap charge at $2.5 million.

Kurt Warner played for the Giants in 2004 and will play for another team in 2005, but he will be the third-highest cap hit next season for the Rams at $6.7 million. When the Giants let him go, he'll be on their cap book, too. Eddie George got a lot of TV time as a Dallas Cowboy this past fall but he's still very much a Titan on the accounting sheet with a $4 million charge. Jeremiah Trotter recently got back from the Pro Bowl as an Eagle but the Redskins will remember him most for his $4.8 million cap charge in 2005.

It is a reality of the business of football -- the sins of the past come back to haunt most teams at one time or another. I understand these things happen to the best of teams, and considering some of the past seasons around the league this isn't that bad of a list.

The trend in the NFL is to have more cap space, so don't put off to the future what can be dealt with today. That is why we are seeing players like Jeff Garcia and Drew Bledsoe released now and not later in the spring, when some of the cap responsibility can be pushed off to the future.

Look how much the skins will pay for Trotter

The skins are dumdums and 6.7 for Warner sucks especially when he will soon be on his 2nd team since being a ram :?
