The Patriots released veteran quarterback and former UofM star Jim Miller on Tuesday. Miller, 33, had been competing for a backup job behind starter Tom Brady. The former Bears' starting signal caller had been bothered by shoulder problems throughout training camp.
The Cowboys released former Lions running back Aveion Cason on Tuesday, the team's official web site. The team also waved goodbye to cornerback Donald Mitchell, linebacker Markus Steele, punter Ryan Flinn, defensive tackles Shaun Smith and Dave Volk, defensive ends Darrell Lee and John Taylor, and wide receiver Cedric James.
Raiders' cornerback and former UofM great Charles Woodson reported to team headquarters on Tuesday and signed an $8.782 million tender. "I guess it's just been long enough," Woodson told ESPN. "We tried out different tactics, and it's just been long enough. It's time to get back in and get to work." Woodson recorded 70 tackles and three interceptions last season.
The Cardinals traded an undisclosed conditional draft pick to the Raiders for running back Troy Hambrick and defensive end Peppi Zellner on Tuesday, according to the Arizona Republic. Hambrick, who started for the Cowboys last season, will serve as the primary backup to Emmitt Smith, just as he did in Dallas for three seasons. Zellner is also a former Cowboy and recorded six sacks from 1999 through 2002 before playing for the Redskins last year.
The Giants released kicker Bill Gramatica on Tuesday, the team's official web site reported. Todd France is now the only kicker on the roster and is presumed to be in line to start in the season opener on September 12. "Todd France has done a good job," head coach Tom Coughlin said. "We are going to continue to work with him and I expect that he would [start in the opener], yes."
