Whether they use outstanding hitting or dominant pitching, the Detroit Tigers are on a roll.

They try to follow up the franchise's first no-hitter in 23 years with their fourth consecutive victory as their home series against the Milwaukee Brewers continues Wednesday night.

Justin Verlander threw his fastball as hard as 102 mph in Tuesday's series opener, recording the first no-hitter in Comerica Park's eight-year history as the Tigers won 4-0.

"We only hit four or five balls hard all night ... that's how dominant he was," said Brewers third baseman Craig Counsell, who accounted for two of Verlander's 12 strikeouts.

It was also the first no-hitter for a Detroit pitcher since Jack Morris did it in 1984 - the year of the Tigers' last World Series championship.

"A lot of things go through your mind when something like this happens," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland, fighting back tears. "I'm very happy for him, happy for the team, happy for the fans to see something special."

Although the Tigers (37-26) managed only four runs Tuesday, their offense has been special all month. Detroit is averaging 8.1 runs in 10 June contests, with a .343 team batting average and a .409 on-base percentage.

Third baseman Brandon Inge went 2-for-2 with a home run Tuesday, while Curtis Granderson extended his hitting streak to 12 games with his major league-leading 13th triple.

Detroit starter Mike Maroth (4-2, 5.29 ERA) draws the unenviable task of trying to follow Verlander's effort. The left-hander is also seeking his first win of the year at Comerica.

Maroth is 0-2 with a 5.60 ERA in four home starts, compared with a 4-0 record and 5.08 ERA in seven road outings. Run support has been the main reason for the record differential, as the Tigers are scoring an average of 10.9 runs for Maroth on the road, but only 4.0 at home.

He received plenty of support at Texas on Friday, when he allowed three runs and eight hits over five innings but got credit for Detroit's 11-4 victory.

Maroth has never faced Milwaukee.

Meanwhile, Chris Capuano (5-5, 4.35) will try to get both himself and the Brewers back on the right track.

Capuano's fortunes have paralleled those of his team this year. The left-hander was 5-0 with a 2.31 ERA and a .212 opponent batting average through his first seven outings.

Prior to Capuano's eighth start - at the New York Mets on May 13 - the Brewers owned a major league-best 25-11 record and an eight-game lead in the NL Central. Capuano lasted only four innings in losing the May 13 contest, and has gone 0-5 with a 6.89 ERA and .317 opponent batting average in his last six starts - all Milwaukee losses.

In that same span, the Brewers (34-30) have stumbled to a 9-19 record - including four losses in the last five games - although their lead remains a healthy 5 1/2 games in a division where no other team has a winning record.

Capuano matched season highs with six runs and eight hits allowed Friday at Texas, walking four in four innings of Milwaukee's 9-6 defeat.

Detroit first baseman Sean Casey is 5-for-12 (.417) with two homers in his career versus Capuano.

Brewers slugger Prince Fielder, whose 23 home runs lead the NL, went 0-for-3 with a strikeout Tuesday in his first game in the city where his father Cecil Fielder starred from 1990-96.

Prince Fielder, who is estranged from his father, announced through the team that he will not be answering any questions about his time in Detroit.

Verlander was pretty awesome last night. I wish I could have seen that game. Congrats to Justin. Morris was 28 when he threw that no hitter in '84. Justin is only a mere 24. I'm thinking this may not be his last....

How many no hitters have been thrown? I know no many at all...it's pretty amazing but this kid is a phenom.

It's so upsetting because I was at Sunday's game, why couldn't it have been that day instead. Oh well, I'm just happy for Justin, he's one of my favorite tigers.

What a great omen for Detroit....the first no-hitter since the '84 WS season!

Me and a couple friends of mine ALMOST went to this game. We taslked about it yesterday and the night before. Imagine how hard I am kicking myself now

I thought he might pitch a no hitter once in his career. If he keeps up his current prowess he might very well throw another this season.

Only three balls made the outfield last night. That shows not only great stuff, but the beginning of the transition from hurler to pitcher. If he can get that Clemens eye and stays healthy he might catch Nolan Ryan because he has a great park in which to pitch.

I was at the game, and it was absolutely AMAZING!!!... Hardly anyone left early, and after Mags caught the last out the fans stayed in their seats for at least another 10-15 minutes... The celebration after the game was awesome. Some of the older folks in the stands were even crying... That was a great game...

Unfortunately, I was exhausted after work and fell asleep during the 4th inning. At that point, Inge's HR was the only hit of the game for either team and I just couldn't keep my eyes open any more. I didn't wake back up until the game was over and everyone was celebrating out on the field. Just my luck!

Last night, Turd Jones gave up 5 hits and 3 ER in 1.0 innings. This guy is pathetic.
