  • GAME SUMMARY:

The Detroit Lions fumbled away their opportunity to pull back to .500 in Chicago on Monday Night Football falling to the Bears 13-7. The Lions would have three red zone turnovers including Mikel LeShoure and Joique Bell fumbles and a Matt Stafford interception while Stefan Logan muffed a couple of punt returns losing one setting up a Chicago score. The Bears would score on their opening drive and that would prove to be nearly all they needed. The Lions, who continue to start slow, avoided being shutout for the first time since October of 2009 with a Ryan Broyles touchdown grab with 30 seconds remaining. An onside's kick failed and the Bears secured their hard earned victory as the Lions suffered anther heart breaking loss. The season now hangs in the balance as the team has left themselves little wiggle room in a strong division.

The Bears would get the ball first and march down the field capping off the drive with a seven yard touchdown pass from Cutler to Brandon Marshall. The Lions defense would limit the Bears to just two field goals the rest of way despite turning the ball over on offense and some poor field position. Ndamukong Suh nearly knocked Cutler out of the games as he slammed the veteran to the ground on one of five Lions sacks on the evening. The defense couldn't be blamed even when forced to start Jonte Green at right corner and play Alfonso Smith heavily and even play Justin Miller who was signed earlier in the day having not played in the league since 2009. Both secondary reinforcements were cut by the Lions earlier in the season. Special teams limited Devin Hester's return game, although Stefan Logan had trouble hanging onto the ball. It was the Lions offense that struggled, especially within the redzone, and that ultimately cost the Lions the game. When Matt Stafford was on target, the receivers dropped the ball. Charles Tillman limited Calvin Johnson to just three catches having a minimal impact on the game.

The Lions would have more first downs (21-19), more total yards (340-296), and average more yards per play both running and passes. The Lions continue to struggle early and often on offense, including third downs where Detroit was 4-13 on their conversion attempts.

The loss drops the Lions to 2-4, well behind the division leading Bears who improved to 5-1. The Lions are the only team with a losing record in the NFC North. Wide receiver Nate Burleson and safety Amari Spievey each left the game on a stretcher.
